If you follow the site on the twitters then you probably saw reference to the possibility of a podcast from yours truly. Well, despite the very kind donation of a mic from SeanPTFC on twitter, it doesn’t look like Plan A will be happening, at least not anytime soon. The logistics of three people across half the globe getting together to talk about the Timbers is just too great. If we could just switch to a nice 30 hour day, maybe, but under this restrictive 24 hour format, it doesn’t look like there will be time.
That doesn’t mean I’ve given up on the idea though. I still would like to give it a go, but in light of my first idea falling through I’ve been revising plans.
First of all, do Timbers need or want another podcast? Well, in terms of needing one, clearly not as we’re lucky to be blessed with a number of good podcasts to supplement the many fine blogs and sites that serve our boys in green.
But do you want one? Obviously there’s no point in me going any further down this road if there’s no interest, considering the time it would take to set-up and engineer.
But if there is interest, what do you want from a podcast? I’m interested in your feedback – you can leave a message here, or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org – but first, why I don’t I give you my thoughts.
I really don’t think there’s any space for another weekly, “blow by blow report of the game, look ahead to the next game” podcast. Doing that kind of podcast isn’t something that particularly interests me. Those kind of podcasts just become white noise to me after a while. Besides, I get all the things I want to say about the game out on twitter or on the site, so I’d just be repeating myself. I may as well just do an audio version of the blog in that case.
So what would it be? Well, my original thoughts were a fortnightly or monthly podcast. Two or three folks, maybe a guest on now and then (not an opposition fan cos I don’t care about them or their team) but mostly just some fans have a “round table” discussion that covers the team in some analytical depth, but with a bit of humour sprinkled in there. Nothing worse than a couple of dudes droning on dryly about blah blah blah, right?
I’m torn on whether to make it a Timbers First podcast that will branch off from Timbers talk to discuss the wider world of football or whether it should be Timbers Only – an hour of chat of tactical trends, player analysis and crude jokes. In both, having some Thorns chat is essential.
Your feedback is welcome and will help shape the podcast, which I’d hope to get up and running by the summer at the latest.
Which brings me to my next point – who wants to join me?
As I said, I’d be looking for 1 or 2 folks who could commit to being a regular co-host every two or four weeks, depending on which schedule we go for. You don’t have to be a big stats or numbers guy/girl, as long as you have some opinions on the club and the players and the ability to back them up without resorting to “just because” reasoning. Also, don’t feel that just because you don’t agree with the kind of stuff I write that it wouldn’t work because there would be nothing worse than a bunch of folk agreeing with each other for an hour.
There is no payment, and it may even be that after one show we realise it’s not working and we never speak of it again.
Also, if you’d fancy being on such a podcast, but more in a guest role capacity, then let me know what you think you’d bring to it.
As for roles, hopefully someone out there with some audio editing experience would be nice. I’ll probably take a crack at stitching it together on my own, but there will be occasions when I don’t have the time to, so it’d be nice to have a back-up on standby who’d be willing to pitch in and help for little more than the sense of a job well done and a beer now and then!
In conclusion, thanks to everyone for support when I tentatively floated the idea on twitter – you’re to blame for anything that comes of this. You know that, right? Support was also pretty high for a ‘cast on the site survey so many of you filled in last year.
If you are interested in getting involved, probably best to email me, email@example.com, and we’ll go from there. I don’t know that I’ll get much chance over the next couple of days to sit down and get into the nitty-gritty, but I will definitely be back in touch over the weekend, and we can take it from there.
